As absentee and affidavit ballot counts continue, Republican challenger Claudia Tenney continues to lead in the race for New York’s 22nd Congressional District — though her lead over incumbent U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi, D-Utica, has tightened.
Three counties in the congressional district are reporting preliminary results as of Monday, which have edged Brindisi closer. After Election Day, in-person voting results showed the first-term congressman behind by more than 28,000 votes.
More than 50,000 absentee ballots will be counted in the race, with the state Board of Elections reporting that more than 69,000 absentee ballots were mailed to voters throughout the eight-county district.
Preliminary results show Brindisi ahead of Tenney in Cortland County, with 11,079 votes to the former congresswoman’s 9,551. Brindisi took the lead after receiving 3,619 absentee and affidavit ballots to Tenney’s 1,117 in the county.
Brindisi also gained some ground in Tioga County, with 741 absentee and affidavit votes to Tenney’s 306. The Democrat still trails in the county when adding in Election Day totals, with Tenney ahead 3,051 to 2,676.
The Herkimer County Board of Elections released preliminary numbers Monday afternoon, showing Tenney leading in the county with 13,569 votes to Brindisi’s 10,004. Tenney’s lead in the county from Election Day has shrunk, when she was ahead by nearly 5,000 votes — 12,467 to 7,637.
In Madison County, Brindisi picked up 4,330 absentee votes to Tenney’s 1,663. Tenney leads in the county, 17,023 to 15,556, based on preliminary results posted to the county’s website.
Brindisi also picked up nearly 1,000 votes from absentee ballots in Oswego County, with 2,024 to Tenney’s 1,053. When combined with Election Day results, Tenney remains ahead, 13,401 to 7,329, in Oswego County, with about 580 affidavits left to count, according to the county’s board of elections.
Chenango County Board of Elections Republican Commissioner Mary Lou Monahan said the county should be finished counting ballots by Thursday.
Oneida County and Broome County boards of elections did not respond to requests for comment and results.
Oneida County reported more than 15,000 absentee ballots received, while Broome County had more than 17,000 absentee ballots, according to state Board of Election figures.
Preliminary figures from the state show more absentee ballots have been received from Democrats — 23,631 of 31,774 — than Republicans — 15,158 of 20,928. The third-largest block of voters is unaffiliated with 8,376 ballots of 12,001 already received.
